The total population of Portugal on 1 January 2016 stood at 10,341,300. Its population declined by 38,400 in 2015, due to an excess of deaths over births, together with outward migration.
As of 1 January 2016, the core Jewish population of Portugal was estimated to be 600 (0.006% of the wider population), and the enlarged Jewish population was estimated at 1000 (0.01% of the wider population).
An estimated 1,200 Portuguese qualify for Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return.
The Jewish community is concentrated in Lisbon. There are also communities in Oporto, Belmonte and Algarve .
