Why is Census Day so important to the Jewish community in the UK?

The UK census happens every ten years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. JPR is the only research institute that analyses the UK census to bring a unique view of British Jewry, by producing a number of focused reports for various sectors in the Jewish community following each census. Census data, once analysed, are of particular interest to community leaders and planners because they can provide a remarkably detailed and accurate view of the nation’s Jewish population, as well as a clear indication of the changes that have taken place since the last census in 2011. But if we want it to tell the full story everybody needs to take part.
Watch this panel discussion on the importance of Census Day 2021, with Dr Jonathan Boyd (Executive Director, Institute for Jewish Policy Research), Peter Benton (Deputy National Statistician and Director General for Health, Population & Methods, Office for National Statistics) and Eli Spitzer (prominent Orthodox Jewish educator and blogger). Chaired by Gillian Merron (Chief Executive of the Board of Deputies of British Jews) in partnership with The Jewish Chronicle.
